Why Crochet Makes a Calming Meditative Practice for the Restless
If you've followed me for a while you might know that I have a form of OCD that causes me to pick at my skin. Because of my restless nature, I've always found it extremely difficult to sit totally still. I learned to crochet to give my hands something to do but quickly learned that it calmed my mind as well! Keep reading for all my best tips on how to use crochet as a mindfulness practice.
Find a Quiet Space
I've found the most success with meditating when I choose a space with as few distractions as possible. When it's warm, I usually choose to be outside. Since there's been snow on the ground lately, I've been sitting in my hallway! Earplugs help if you're sensitive to sound like I am. I totally enjoy crocheting while watching a show too (preferably trashy reality tv). I don't meditate every time I crochet. I try to do my meditation practice for 10-20 minutes a few times a week or when I'm feeling anxious. Find what works for you!
Choose a Simple Project
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a complicated pattern from time to time. Following or designing a crochet pattern invigorates the mind in a different way. Think about the concentration that goes into doing a jigsaw puzzle. The goal of crocheting as meditation is to calm the mind versus stimulate it. Choose something with repetitive stitches like a blanket or scarf. This will allow you to relax as you crochet. Save the more challenging crochet for when you're feeling creative and inspired.
Count Your Stitches
Counting my stitches as I crochet has been the most effective way for me to calm my racing thoughts. This might not work for everyone. I think counting appeals to my obsessive-compulsive tendencies but you might find it distracting. Focusing on your breathing or a mantra are other things you could try.
Choose a Yarn that makes You Happy
My favorite color is yellow. It reminds me of sunshine and makes me happy. I chose a buttery soft, warm yellow yarn to make a blanket and only work on this project when I'm meditating. I get really excited to work on it!
Choose a Stitch You Enjoy
It's the same idea with the stitch you choose for your meditative practice. Personally, I prefer to work double crochet or moss stitch when meditating. These are the two stitches I'm most comfortable with and enjoy. Everyone is different and should explore what works best for them.
The repetitive nature of crochet makes it possible for me to slow down my scattered thoughts and focus on what's right in front of me. If you struggle to be still in your body you're not alone!
